Unlike many of the other college job platforms out there, the stars of Epic Hire are the students themselves. We want to grant students the space to tell their stories rather than be reduced to a resume.

In our student interview series, we’re going a bit deeper with some of the awesome all-stars that we’ve gotten to know through our app. The questions we ask are often inspired by their Epic Hire profiles. So recruiters, think of this as inspiration for those “getting to know you questions” you might ask in an intro interview. Epic Hire is making that piece of the puzzle easier (and a lot more fun).

For our first interview, we’re talking to Arizona State senior, Bella Gaspar. Whether she’s a potential job candidate or a student peer, enjoy learning more!

The Basics

Name: Bella Gaspar
Hometown: Vancouver, BC, Canada
School: Arizona State
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Grad Year: 2024 (Undergraduate), 2025 (Graduate)

The College Experience

Epic Hire: Let’s kick things off by hearing about your college experience at ASU. What activities or organizations have you been involved in during your time at ASU?

Bella:

-D1 Lacrosse Player
-SAAC Member (President & Executive Board Member)
-Engineering Futures Program (Program is primarily focused on improving demographic of
first-generation and minority engineering students)
-Fellowship of Christian Athletes

Epic Hire: Why’d you choose Arizona State?

Bella: I chose ASU because I was being recruited for lacrosse and it offered me the best location, coaches, weather, athletic facilities, scholarship, and major options. I fell in love with it instantly and knew it was the place for me.

Epic Hire: “Best” weather may be a hot take, but we’ll get to that later. But speaking of ASU athletics…what exactly is a Sun Devil?

Bella: The idea for a Sun Devil comes from a weather phenomenon known as a whirlwind. In some places, it is referred to as a “dust devil” or a “dancing devil.” Sparky is the physical representation of this in a mascot form.

Epic Hire: Wow! We truthfully were not expecting such an official answer. Well done, Sparky would be proud.

Trying to Turn College into a Resume

Epic Hire: What’s been the most influential part of your college experience?

Bella: Being a division 1 athlete has been the most influential part of my college experience. It has taught me that I am capable of so much when I put my mind into something. It has also influenced my life in terms of relationships. I have met my best friends through playing at this level and have created bonds that will last a lifetime.

Epic Hire: That’s awesome. But here’s the tricky part: Do you think someone interested in hiring you would know that from a traditional resume?

Bella: No, probably not.

Epic Hire: And as you know, being one of our Brand Ambassadors, that is something we’re working on solving.

Bella, Epic Hire, and Looking Forward

Epic Hire: What do you enjoy most about Epic Hire?

Bella: In today’s world it is very hard to find jobs in general. On top of that, since I was competing in the summers and training/playing throughout the year it was next to impossible to secure a relevant internship. I enjoy Epic Hire because employers are looking for team-oriented and determined individuals who, although may lack years of experience, possess the soft skills that can be used to create a great employee.

Epic Hire: What photo, badge, accomplishment, etc. on your Epic Hire profile is your favorite or makes you feel the most proud?

Bella: My Scholarship Badge. This is because it signifies so much of the hard work and sacrifice not only myself, but my family has made to help me get to the position I am in. Especially coming from Canada, playing D1 in the US is not very common and I’m very proud to have earned a scholarship to play the sport I love.

Epic Hire: You’re a mechanical engineering major, what’s next? Do you have a dream job coming out of college?

Bella: I loved studying mechanical engineering in my undergrad. I am now pursuing my Masters in Sports Law and Business and my eventual dream job is to be a footwear engineer. My ultimate goal is to be the first Olympian to play and compete in a cleat they helped engineer.

Epic Hire: That’s honestly one of the coolest answers we’ve heard.

Quick Fire Round

Epic Hire: Ok, let’s have some fun. We’re going to ask some quick questions, you give us the answers that pop into your mind. Ready?

Bella: Yep, I’m ready.

Epic Hire: What would you spirit animal be?

Bella: Lion.

Epic Hire: Playing or coaching?

Bella: Playing.

Epic Hire: Arizona summers or Canadian winters?

Bella: Canadian winters.

Epic Hire: Best place to get food in Tempe?

Bella: Either Postino’s or Fuzzy’s Taco Shop.

Epic Hire: It’s almost Halloween, what’s the best kind of candy?

Bella: Cookies & Cream Hersey’s or Fuzzy Peaches–Fuzzy Peaches are Canadian, no one here knows them.

Epic Hire: Finally, what’s one thing not on your resume that you’d want hiring managers to know about you?

Bella: I have experience with content creation and other media.

Epic Hire: Incredible! Bella we appreciate the chat, and the commitment you’ve shown Epic Hire. We’ll talk soon!

Bella: Thanks! See ya guys!
